RETIREMENT / DEFERRED COMP

The State of Nebraska offers a retirement plan to provide lifetime benefits to recognize State service. Full-time employees, other than temporaries, who are 30 years of age and have two years of continuous service at any time, must participate in the plan.

Any employee who has attained the age of 20 and has a total of one year of service may elect voluntary participation within 60 days of meeting these parameters. State employees contribute 4.33% of gross wages up to $864 in their account and then 4.8% for each calendar year. The State matches the employee's contribution at the rate of 156%. The benefits under the plan are in addition to, and supplement, benefits received from Social Security.

A Deferred Compensation Plan is also available to State employees. Under the provision of this voluntary supplemental retirement plan, employees may request the State to defer payment of a portion of their income to a later date.

The taxes normally due now are deferred until retirement when most participants are in a lower tax bracket. The State invests the deferred income, at the discretion of the participant, in a fixed, stock, bond, money market, or several other available investment options. Any investment gains remain in the annuity account and are not reportable for Federal or State income tax purposes.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING

The State of Nebraska provides tax sheltering for Dependent Care and non-reimbursed Medical Care expenses through Flexible Spending accounts. The Medical Care account allows you to be reimbursed for such expenses as deductibles, co-payments, and uninsured medical and dental expenses. The expenses covered must be "Medically Necessary" to qualify. The Dependent Care account allows you to be reimbursed for work-related expenses, such as day-care, after-school care, and elderly care.

TUITION ASSISTANCE

Employees enrolled in courses of instruction related to their work or future advancement in the agency, may be eligible for reimbursement of credit hour costs. This program is designed to enable employees to receive additional education to enhance job performance.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE

In order to assist employees and their family members with personal problems, which may be impacting an employee's ability to perform their job, the State of Nebraska offers confidential counseling and referral services through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). These counseling services vary from marital and financial counseling to substance abuse and other emotional difficulties.
