![]() WHO WE ARE: We are the state agency responsible for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of all state highways. The activities are financed from taxes and fees paid by highway users, with motor fuel taxes providing the largest share of the revenues. Our mission is to provide and maintain, in cooperation with public and private organizations, a safe, efficient, affordable and coordinated statewide transportation system for the movement of people and goods. The Nebraska Department of Roads employs over 2,000 employees to accomplish its mission and goals. The following career opportunities are examples of occupations available within the Department:
Our Agency is made up of a state headquarters, located in Lincoln, and highway field districts, located throughout the state. A district engineer, who is a Department employee, manages each district. There are field construction offices and maintenance yards located in most of the larger communities within the state. The state headquarters, located in Lincoln, houses several divisions, which support the districts in designing, constructing, and maintaining the roads. A State Highway Commission appointed by the Governor conducts studies, public hearings, and serves in an advisory capacity to the Director establishing policies for carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the Agency.
