The Center for Advanced Nursing Practice

"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice. It is not something to be waited for, it is something to be achieved" -
William Jennings Bryan

(William Jennings Bryan - benefactor and namesake Bryan Memorial Hospital, now BryanLGH East)

Today that idea is more important than ever. Especially in health care where technological, social and economic issues combine to affect each of us at the most basic level of our health and well being. The reality is we are in the midst of a health care revolution. Advancing technology, together with an awareness of limited medical resources and a public cry for more personal control over health-related decisions, are powering this whirlwind of change.

As the largest health care provider in Lincoln, we feel an obligation to lead the way through the complexities of progress and change before us. And, because we are linked to communities all across the state, through patients who travel to BryanLGH Medical Center East for specialized care, we believe that our leadership must radiate outward to reach our counterparts and contemporaries across greater Nebraska.

A Simple Equation

The more knowledgeable and skillful the nurse, the higher the total quality of a patient's health care. But keeping up with the latest developments in nursing is no easy task. More than 200 nursing journals are published each year in the United States. Tapping into that data and incorporating it into daily practice is a lifelong pursuit for caring professionals.

At BryanLGH East the priority, placed on delivering the latest in nursing care through nursing professionals to all patients in Nebraska, is enabled and embodied in the Center for Advanced Nursing Practice. The Center's threefold mission includes:

  • education
  • research
  • case management for BryanLGH patients living outside of Lincoln.

The Center offers continuing education and professional development for local, state and regional nurses. Continuing the precedent set by BryanLGH Excellence in Nursing Forum, the Center brings visionaries of modern nursing practice to Lincoln for seminars, workshops and lectures.

The Center also functions as a locus for nursing innovation. Nursing research primarily looks at how patients respond to particular diseases and treatments, both physiologically and psychosocially. Nurses at BryanLGH East are investigating such areas as chronic orthopedic pain and the connection between physical stamina and the patient's ability to manage tasks of daily living at home. The Center supports this work, as well as, shares findings with nurses throughout the region.

Cardiac

The Most Complete Cardiovascular Care in the Region

BryanLGH East is the region's leader in providing high-quality, cost-effective care for patients suffering from cardiovascular disease. Each year, we perform more diagnostic and interventional procedures than any other cardiovascular program in Nebraska. We work with community hospitals and physicians to provide a network of comprehensive services, including cardiology clinics, mobile services, emergency transport and rehabilitation programs, in addition to the prevention, diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation programs available in the Medical Center. This program achieves consistently higher outcomes than national averages on returning patients home to active, functional lifestyles.

Working with the Family Physician

The driving philosophy in the BryanLGH East outreach program is maintaining a cohesive and effective interaction between our cardiovascular specialists and the family physician. The physician remains an active and integral part of any procedures performed on the BryanLGH East campus or through any of our mobile outreach services. Many of the services we offer are administered and delivered close to home via our growing network of mobile services, including mobile diagnostic, echo, vascular, nuclear and catheterization labs. The fact is, we would not be able to provide the comprehensive range of services we have today without the many partnerships we've formed with local physicians and hospitals throughout the state.

The Future of Heart Care at BryanLGH East

Throughout our history as the leading cardiovascular program in the state of Nebraska, we have seen many changes in the cardiovascular care. As part of our commitment to serving patient needs, we will continue to embrace emerging technologies and selective medical procedures that benefit the patients we serve. We understand the commitment Nebraskans have to their families and hometowns. We recognize the discomfort associated with seeking medical advice and care away from home. Therefore, we will continue to work with physicians and facilities across the state to provide medical services and cardiac care in local communities. Our patients will receive the same level of care, compassion and professionalism, whether administered at BryanLGH East or in their hometowns.

Orthopedics

BryanLGH East among the leaders for
Joint Replacement Surgeries

The latest Medicare statistics shown that BryanLGH East is one the nation's busiest hospitals for total knee joint and total hip replacement surgeries. Based on 1997 data, BryanLGH East professionals performed 637 orthopedic surgeries involving Medicare patients, the most in Nebraska and the 14th highest total in the United States. In 1996, the overall volume at BryanLGH East was 15th among all U. S. hospitals treating Medicare patients.

This growth and improved patient care have resulted from cooperative efforts between physicians and BryanLGH East staff, consistency in patient preparation, advanced, innovative surgical procedures, as well as, improved hospitalization and patient care practices. An ongoing study at BryanLGH East indicates that an improved planning process is leading to shorter hospitalizations and reduced costs while placing patients in the most appropriate setting for their rehabilitation and recovery. In 1994, the average lengths of stay were 5.4 days following total knee joint replacement surgery and 5.5 days after hip replacement surgery. Currently, those averages have been reduced to 4.1 and 4.4 days respectively.

Among the factors which have allowed BryanLGH East to cut costs about 8 percent for knee replacement procedures and about 15 percent for hip replacements over the past three years are: offering pre-assessments, as well as, standardizing equipment and care.

Physicians note that the BryanLGH East pre-operative education program prepares patients and families so they know what to expect. The doctors and hospital staff also are standardizing aspects of care following joint replacement surgeries. By agreeing on a uniform set of post-operative orders, a routine is attained that results in surgeons, referring physicians, the hospital staff and the patient all knowing what is to be anticipated at various points of a stay.

Working as a team gets patients ready for short-term rehabilitation or skilled nursing facilities sooner. Combined with an aggressive approach to starting physical therapy, BryanLGH East has consistently reduced post-surgery complications and improved patient outcomes.

Through pre-operative teaching and assessment, the state-of-the-art equipment, support from various medical specialties, skilled surgeons, and the professional care present in the patient care units, BryanLGH East continually assures the well being and success of its patients.

Nebraska Sports Injury and Physical Therapy Center

Not content to focus on excellence in the orthopedic surgical areas alone, BryanLGH East has recently introduced an outpatient facility which is taking a unique approach to sports injury treatment and physical therapy services. It's an aggressive, yet focused, approach that takes into account the patient's individual needs and goals as they work toward recovery. The services of the Nebraska Sports Injury and Physical Therapy Center are multifaceted. For example, we cover the following areas of outpatient care:

  • Outpatient and Sports Physical Therapy
  • Athletic Reconditioning and Recovery

Outpatient and Sports Physical Therapy

We believe that the competitive nature of athletics calls for an aggressive, yet focused approach to injury care and rehabilitation. Patients benefit from our knowledgeable staff of physical therapists who practice that approach as they evaluate and treat orthopedic and sports-related conditions.

Athletic Reconditioning and Recovery Programs

Our staff offers athletic reconditioning and recovery programs that consider total body health when assessing injuries and creating a recovery plan. We endeavor to return athletes to competition safely and swiftly. This program bridges the gap between when traditional therapy ends and athletic competition resumes.
