What Matters
At the American Heart Association, our work matters. Millions of Americans are counting on us to defeat heart disease and stroke. Their hopes - and sometimes their lives - depend on our ability to accomplish this extraordinary task.
Our Mission
Every 33 seconds, someone dies of cardiovascular disease. As the U.S.
population ages, heart and blood vessel diseases will affect more people.
Our goal is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk factors by 25 percent by the year 2010. With your help, we will all live longer, healthier and more productive lives.
What We Do
To achieve our mission, we:
- Discover, interpret and process scientific information.
- Communicate cardiovascular science, medical and consumer health
information.
- Advocate the American Heart Association's position to key audiences.
- Generate resources to fund these activities.
Our Organization
The American Heart Association was founded in 1924 and is the oldest and largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke.
These diseases claim more lives than the next seven causes of death combined.
Our headquarters is in Dallas, Texas. We have 15 regional affiliates and hundreds of local offices in communities throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. More than 4 million Americans
volunteers each year to help in our lifesaving work.
We are a leading authority on cardiovascular disease, and our conferences, journals, and other information have earned a worldwide reputation for scientific excellence. Last year we spent more than $300 million on research,
public education and professional education and community service programs.
In the last twelve years, we have funded more than $1 billion in cardiovascular research, a commitment second only to that of the federal government. American Heart Association-funded research has led to such discoveries as CPR, bypass surgery,
pacemakers, artificial heart valves, microsurgery, life-extending drugs and new surgical techniques to repair heart defects. Three Nobel Prizes have been won by researchers whose work was funded by the American Heart Association.
